Stay Healthy At The Bbq

by diethunters.com

Everyone likes to go to a BBQ, whether it is at a friend's house, the beach or the park. The smell of the food cooking, the laughter of friends and the warmth of the sun are all wonderful. However, if you are on a diet, you might find that a BBQ is just one temptation after another. Many people would feel rude if they declined an invitation or if they declined to eat after they arrived. You do not have to feel this way though. You can have a great time at the BBQ still remain healthy. Here are a few tips to help you do that.

Stay Healthy At The Bbq

Don't Go to the BBQ Hungry

If you arrive at the festivities on an empty stomach, you are going to be more likely to eat unhealthy foods when you get there. By eating a salad or some other healthy snack before you go, you will not feel the need to indulge in chips and salsa or cookies when you arrive.

Eat Smart

Rather than telling the host that you aren't going to be able to eat anything because you are on a diet, you can simply choose the foods that you do eat with an eye toward the healthy. You will want to load up on any vegetables that they have at the BBQ. Since many BBQs don't focus much on vegetables, you might want to bring a large veggie platter for everyone to share. The host and other people will surely appreciate this, and you can eat from the tray rather than filling up on unhealthy food.

If you have a burger, make sure that you don't eat the bun. Grilled burgers have lots of protein, and even though they have some fat, it isn't going to kill your diet. Steaks are similar in that they have a lot of protein. If you have the choice of chicken, you should choose that instead.

As for the sides, most of the traditional BBQ food is unhealthy. Stick to vegetables whenever possible and remember that potato salad is not a vegetable! If they have any light pasta salads that don't have mayonnaise or other unhealthy dressings, they can work as a healthy side.

When it comes to the drinks, try to stay away from the soda and the alcoholic beverages. Water is going to be your best option. It is healthier and you will need to have more water in your system if it is a warm, sunny day outside. You do not want to be dehydrated.

Eat Little

You do not have to overeat when you go to a BBQ, although it can be tempting and quite easy to do. Eat just enough so that you feel full and satisfied. Instead of eating more, talk with your friends and family. After all, a BBQ should be more about gathering with your loved ones than eating until you can't move!

Following these tips should help you and your diet survive even the biggest and best BBQ in the neighborhood.
